Bosco della Mesola: a place to dive

Visit it during a stay in our farmhouse

Among the natural attractions that you can visit during a stay at the Dosso farm, the Bosco della Mesola is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and evocative places.

The reserve extends between the municipalities of Goro, Codigoro and Mesola and is characterized by a typically Mediterranean vegetation, with tamarisk trees and holm oaks, but also with long-stemmed trees, such as pine, willow, poplar or, again, oak.

But it is the fauna, rich in peculiar species, that makes the Forest of Mesola so interesting. The protagonist, among the various animals to be observed, is certainly the Cervo della Mesola, considered by experts to be an autochthonous species, still present today, albeit in a small number, in the reserve of Ferrara. Other mammals that live there are: the fallow deer, the badger, the polecat, the hedgehog and the vole, more or less visible depending on the season.

Bird-watching enthusiasts will also find plenty of opportunities in the Bosco della Mesola to stay in suspense. In the reserve, in fact, live numerous varieties of birds, including the blackbird, the great tit, the blackcap and the tawny owl. And, to complete the picture of the local fauna, also several species of reptiles, some of which are particularly rare, such as the blacco, the tortoise of Hermann and the lake tortoise.

What is the best time to visit the Mesola Forest?

The Bosco della Mesola reserve, easily accessible by car during a stay in a farmhouse in Ferrara and surroundings, is open to the public between March and early October. The spring period remains, however, the best for trips and excursions, as the climate does not yet touch too high temperatures, while the rains are infrequent. Alternatively, you can opt for the first weeks of September.

A short distance from Bosco della Mesola, there are other places of Ferrara worth mentioning. One of them, the Abbey of Pomposa, which is just a few minutes away and is ready to give you a magical journey through the history, culture and art of the area. Equally close is the Lido di Volano, where you can stop to take a look at the coast and, why not, take some souvenir photos with a dream view.

To make the walk at the Bosco della Mesola even more enjoyable, our advice is to choose the right equipment. Both in terms of clothing, which should be comfortable, practical and preferably 'onion', or with various layers to be removed, if it should be hot. The shoes to wear are those for trekking, even better if closed, to also face any swampy areas.

Fundamental, then, is an anti-mosquito spray, especially if you are going to visit the Forest of Mesola in the months from May to early September, when insects could cause you discomfort. The equipment continues with a pair of sports sunglasses and a canvas hat, to protect yourself from the sun that beats at noon, with water, packed lunch and a camera to capture the most beautiful views.
